Despite never being one to enjoy being in the spotlight, I was always drawn to theatre. It was a different world; creative, imaginative, escapism. It wasn’t until university that I discovered a liking for photography. And it wasn’t until I combined this new passion with theatre years later that I found my calling. It’s the lights, the emotion, the story, the whole atmosphere of a performance that makes each show unique. And when you manage to capture all those aspects in a single image, you capture a little bit of that magic forever.
Working quietly and unobtrusively, my main aim is to capture the character that the actor works so hard to become. I also feel that working in colour often enhances the artistry of all the other elements of stage craft, and better captures the atmosphere on stage. However, black and white is a favourite of mine when working with rehearsal room shots. It takes away the colour and distraction of the surroundings, and focuses solely on the actor.
